Dr. Craigen is a clinician with outpatient obligations. He is very active in teaching and is an award-winning educator. His enthusiasm for teaching focuses mainly on bioethics and medical – legal issues in the clinical work of undergraduate medical students as well as on teaching medical legal and ethical aspects of privacy in this digital age and of psychopharmacology to physicians in practice.
Prior to medical school, Dr. Craigen completed a law degree and articles of clerkship. After psychiatry residency he did a fellowship in Bioethics. He has been trained in mindfulness and has also completed the practicum program at the University of Massachusetts Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Healthcare, and Society.
Dr. Craigen is author of a book chapter in eating disorders and papers on psychopharmacology as well as nutraceuticals.
His primary commitments have been in teaching as well as evaluating and regulating physicians in Canada and the United States. Dr. Craigen has been an external reviewer for licensing bodies in Canada as well as in the United States and have examined many times as an oral adult psychiatry examiner for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He has been elected as a Fellow of the American College of Psychiatrists as well as of the American Psychiatric Association.
He has been on the National Council of the Canadian Medical Protective Association in Ottawa since 2012 which is the mutual medical defence association of Canada where he is interested in empowering better health care.
