Having close family and friends who’ve suffered from mental illness and dementia, Richard experienced first-hand the challenge of accessing support for both those affected by the illness and the families involved. In 2013, he founded Healios to transform the way mental health care is delivered through technology.

My field of expertise is in the development and implementation of simple and affordable interventions to treat mental disorders, particularly in resource-poor settings. Among these initiatives, I developed a model of care to treat common mental disorders, which has been used and adapted in many settings.

Dr Shahar Avin is a postdoctoral research associate at the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk (CSER). His research examines challenges and opportunities in the implementation of risk mitigation strategies, particularly in areas involving high uncertainty and heterogenous or conflicting interests and incentives. Mixing anthropological methods and agent-based modelling, Shahar works with other CSER researchers and others in the X-risk community to identify and design opportunities for impact.
