Matthew is a Computer Science PhD student at Stony Brook University and has 5 years of experience as a professional software engineer in industry. At Stony Brook University he is part of the Human Language Analysis Beings(HLAB) group, under advisor H. Andrew Schwartz, where he works with natural language processing to better understand how language reflects who we are as people. To do this, both traditional machine learning techniques as well as modern deep learning neural networks are core tools. He believes that there’s an importance on not forgetting the utility of traditional methods for both explainability and ease of deployment in the real world when compared to deep neural networks.
